Yesterday (June 25, 2009) was the saddest day as two legendary icons passed on. The world grieves for the loss because for most of us, it seems like a part of us died along with them. Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett defined much of my childhood.
My parents were huge fans of Farrah Fawcett from her Charlie’s Angels days. I think I first heard of her from my dad.
My closest contact with Michael Jackson was ages ago in 1993. Then I was a kid on the brink of teenagehood, and my older cousins and I went to watch Michael Jackson at the National Stadium in Singapore. It was his first performance in Singapore and it was also the first time that the National Stadium was used as a concert venue. Such was his allure – the huge outdoor stadium was packed with 50,000fans screaming, crying etc. You could feel the energy and when Michael Jackson appeared on stage, it was like God himself standing there in front of you. It was also his 35th birthday then.
It was also my first foray into dressing up fashionably for an event and I will always remember fondly, the too-tight black striped pencil pants and black sleeveless top that I wore.
We’ll always miss Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett and we pray that they’re safe with God somewhere up there….
